Chesterfield's Santa Season Runs on Cookies. Which Table Fits Your Family?

Which Santa cookie table should a Chesterfield family book this December? There are three, run by three different organizations: the City of Chesterfield, the Chesterfield Regional Chamber and the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House in Faust Park.

Each event sets its own rules on who pays, how many families get in, what time of day it runs and when registration opens. Those four details settle the choice for most families.

What a Family of Four Pays at Each Table

Start with the money, because the gap between the three is wider than the shared name suggests. The city charges $10 per child and lets adults in free. The Chamber charges $25 per child if you reserve ahead or $30 at the door. At the Butterfly House, every ticket costs money: $8 for children ages 3 to 12 and $12 for anyone 13 and over, with lower prices for Missouri Botanical Garden members. Children 2 and under get in free.

Here is the math for two adults and two children ages 3 to 12, based on each organizer's posted 2026 prices:

Event Organizer Date and time Two adults, two kids
Cookies with Santa City of Chesterfield Fri., Dec. 4, 6 p.m. $20
Cookies with Santa at the Carousel Chesterfield Regional Chamber Sat., Dec. 5, 9 a.m. or 11 a.m. session $50 advance, $60 at the door
Cookies with the Clauses Butterfly House Sun., Dec. 13, timed sessions $40, or $30 for Garden members

The Butterfly House is the only one that charges adults, yet it still comes in under the Chamber event for this family. Change the mix and the order changes too. One parent with three kids pays $30 at City Hall, $75 in advance at the Carousel and $36 at the Butterfly House.

Friday Night at City Hall Is the Pajama Option

The city's event takes place Friday, Dec. 4, at 6 p.m. at Chesterfield City Hall on Chesterfield Parkway West. The city's Rec1 registration catalog describes it plainly: families are invited to bring slippers and reindeer pajamas, gather around Mr. Claus' cookie table, and sit by the tree while Santa reads holiday stories. Only children need to register.

The format has changed a little since last year. Last season, West Newsmagazine's Holiday Happenings guide listed the event as "Cookies with the Clauses" at 6:30 p.m. on a Friday, $10 per child for ages 2 to 12, with every child accompanied by an adult. This year it is called Cookies with Santa, starts half an hour earlier, and the calendar listing describes it as "All Ages." The 6 p.m. start matters most for families with toddlers who are in bed by 7:30.

For a family that wants the Santa visit to be the whole outing, with no ride lines and no crafts schedule, this is the simplest of the three. It also costs the least for almost any family size.

Saturday Morning Asks You to Choose

Saturday, Dec. 5, is the crowded part of the calendar. The Chamber's Cookies with Santa at the Carousel runs at the St. Louis Carousel, 15189 Olive Boulevard in Faust Park, with two sessions: 9 to 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Each session is capped at 150 children, and the adult bringing them registers first and then adds each child's name. Last year West Newsmagazine listed the advance price at $20 per child, along with hot chocolate, crafts, balloon twisting, face painting and music. The 2026 advance price is $25. The door price is still $30, so registering ahead now saves $5 per child instead of $10.

The city's Candy Cane Hunt also starts that morning at 10 a.m., at Central Park, 16365 Lydia Hill Drive. Entry is $10. Kids hunt in four age groups, 2 to 3, 4 to 5, 6 to 8 and 9 to 12. According to the city's catalog, each group gets its own hunt area and start time, the hunt ends once every candy cane is found, a holiday guest walks the grounds, and crafts and treats follow. Last year walk-up registration cost $15 compared with $10 in advance. The 2026 listing shows only the $10 price, so registering ahead is the safe choice.

Here is the Saturday morning schedule in order.

  1. 9 a.m. The first Carousel session opens.
  2. 10 a.m. The Candy Cane Hunt begins at Central Park, with age groups starting at staggered times.
  3. 10:30 a.m. The first Carousel session ends.
  4. 11 a.m. The second Carousel session opens.

A family with a preschooler and a fourth grader may be dealing with two age-group start times at Central Park while a Carousel session is already underway on Olive. Doing both events in one morning is possible. It works best if you book the Carousel session that falls on the far side of your child's hunt time, and that time will be posted on the city's website.

The Friday before is quieter than last year. The Crossing's Artisan Market on North Eatherton Road was held Friday evening, Dec. 5, last December. The church has announced on its website that it will not continue the market after eight years. That leaves the city's pajama story time as the main Chesterfield event on Friday, Dec. 4.

The Butterfly House Sells Santa by the Hour

The third table is the most structured. Cookies with the Clauses at the Butterfly House is Sunday, Dec. 13, with timed sessions at 11 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 1:15 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. Advance tickets are required, and tickets went on sale Nov. 2. According to the event page, kids can mail a letter to the North Pole, make a holiday craft, follow a scavenger hunt through the Tropical Conservatory and decorate cookies with Mrs. Claus. With only four sessions, preferred times can go quickly.

Six days later, on Saturday, Dec. 19, the Butterfly House hosts Warm Hug Holiday, with the Ice Princess and a snowman. It offers crafts, face painting, homemade reindeer food and hot chocolate, and ticket prices match the Santa event. This one has six timed sessions, starting at 10:15 a.m. and running every hour through 3:15 p.m. For a family whose Dec. 13 session sells out, it is the closest substitute in the same building.

Both events take place during Enchanted Fairy Gardens, when the Tropical Conservatory is filled with fairy gardens among the butterflies. The exhibit runs Nov. 23, 2026, through Jan. 3, 2027, and is included with regular admission. Opening day falls on a Monday, a day the Butterfly House is usually closed, so check hours before going that day. Regular admission is $8 for adults and $5 for seniors 65 and over and children 3 to 12. Children 2 and under and Garden members get in free.

The least expensive visit of the season is Tuesday, Dec. 1. On the first Tuesday of every month, St. Louis City and County residents get in free for the first two hours of operation. You need proof of residency, and the offer is only available onsite. Fall and winter hours start at 10 a.m., which puts the free window at 10 a.m. to noon.

One detail affects families with very young children at all three Butterfly House visits. Because of limited space and USDA containment rules, strollers and wagons are restricted inside the building, including the Tropical Conservatory. The Butterfly House recommends baby slings or carriers and allows only small, lightweight umbrella strollers. The City Hall event is in a city building and the Carousel event is in a party venue, and neither lists a similar restriction.

After Jan. 3, the Conservatory Goes Quiet

The Butterfly House calendar has a few more dates to know. It is closed Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, and on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. It adds a bonus opening on Monday, Dec. 28, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at regular admission prices, a useful option for winter break when other places are closed. The general hours page still lists last season's bonus Mondays, so go by the 2026 event page. Last admission each day is 3:30 p.m.

Fairy Gardens closes Sunday, Jan. 3. After that, the Butterfly House shuts for a few weeks in January for annual maintenance. Any December visit that slips past New Year's weekend will likely have to wait until the building reopens later in the winter.

At Jeff Lottmann, we follow Chesterfield's calendar as closely as its streets, from the Carousel on Olive to the cookie table at City Hall.
